Wax Seals and New Packaging Playtime

Playtime at the House of Beads

With the uptick in sales at The Ears Have It, I’ve had some time to play with packaging lately. A customer recently made a note on their order to mark their package fragile because their post office apparently is pretty brutal. So when I picked up some heavy-duty mailers, I also thought, “Why not look into some other unique gift packaging for the holidays?”

I found some net bags in a variety of pretty autumn colors at my bead store and that got me thinking, what else can I do to give – as my husband puts it – some devil in the details and make my package something unique on the outside as well as what’s on the inside?

As some of you already know, I am going to be the Guest of Honor at Loscon, our local literary science fiction convention over Thanksgiving weekend. I’m going all out on plans to do cosplay for the characters in my series of novels, The Dragonfly Temple Chronicles. To this end, I have been ordering several props for a book trailer/music video and one of these things is a sealing wax kit.

I’ve been fascinated with the art of letter-writing since I was a child, from the first time I got a letter done in calligraphy from my beloved sister Leslie. I taught myself calligraphy and gathered together a small collection of sealing wax impressions as well as a variety of colors of wax. The art seemed to wane with the advent of emails, but you wouldn’t know that on Etsy. There are many sellers of sealing wax in a rainbow of colors never before available when I was a kid, packaged in beautiful, personalized wooden boxes, along with a new way to melt the wax using a tea light over a spoon housed in a metal and/or wooden casing – like a mini furnace.

Seeing this got me really excited about the possibility of ordering a customized wax seal impression of the emblem of my character’s house – a triple dragonfly set against a Celtic knot backdrop. While I am awaiting my order, I have been playing with various wax colors I already have, and a simple dragonfly wax impression I bought on Etsy last year and using this as a finishing touch on the packaging on my orders.

So what do you think? Is this something that would get you excited about getting your order, seeing this on the outside of a plain, ordinary mailer? I’d love to know and if you have any other ideas to spruce up packaging. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

  • Thursday’s Pics – The Day of the Dragonfly

Thursday being a day sacred to the Old Ones Jupiter and Juno, Zeus and Hera and Thor, the colors associated with them made today’s Etsy store choices my favorite ones; Asymmetrical-Midnight-Spiral-earcuff-and-earring-set-163x300Asymmetrical-Midnight-Spiral-earrings-300x204

Green and Royal Blue.  The Asymmetrical Midnight Spiral Goddess Earcuff and Earring Set and it’s matching earrings were absolute joys to make, rich with these “oil-slick” like colors. Their iridescence is hypnotic – I could make jewelry from these colors all day and never get bored of them. Their otherworldly glow extends even to tarot bag fabrics, which I can never seem to leave in the fabric stores when the catch my attention. Dragonfly-Priestess-earrings-300x202Dragonfly-Priestess-Single-earcuff-228x300 But by far, of the ones to add to the store that give me a shiver of excitement and purest burst of love are the Dragonfly Priestess Series. Copper, dragonflies and swarovski crystals made these simple, little designs so magickal for me, I can scarcely form the words for how they touch me. Read their story in the store listing – they were truly made with the purest love for the art of jewelry-making I could ever express.

  • Heading towards…something

Dragonflies never rest, are always darting about their environment as if in an eternal search for something. You could say I am the same way. My crafting studio is crammed with books, beads, lace and fabrics. When I began years ago, there were always new parasol, jewelry or purse designs to be found out there. Though I have refocused my attention these past  and I am on a never-ending quest to hone my sewing skills ’till I find it. When will I know when I have that perfect design? When you can’t resist buying something.

But truthfully, we never reach perfection and I’m not looking to be perfect. I just want to have fun and make something that makes someone go, “Ooooo, that’s pretty.”

If you do, then I’ve done my job.

    [siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Slider_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

It’ll be hard to sell this one. It’s turning out really pretty. The yarn is French Muench and matched the beadwork I did down the sides perfectly even though the beadwork was done two years ago and I bought the yarn last year and from a completely different place. Despite the itchy look of the yarn, it is surprisingly soft! Next I’m doing an inner lining, then weaving the strap.
