  • Gallifrey One 2019 Art Show Update part four – final

    Thank you Gallifrey One!

Gallifrey One has always been one of the best local conventions and it gets better every year. This wonderful lady (on the right) made the show for me when I came in in the morning after the auction. She said, “I regretted not getting the 4th doctor lariat scarf. Will it be available after the show?” I smiled and said, “I’ll sell it to you right now. Just pick it up and take it and the bid sheet to the checkout gals and it’s yours!’ I gave her tips on it’s care and feeding and to make sure it stays secure as it can be a slippery bugger. She was kind enough to take a pic with me and I thank her for it and wished her many happy years of ownership.

I had the great fun of speaking to many art show visitors that morning/afternoon. Thank you each and every one for taking the time to stop by, admire my work and have a chat.

    The Final Tally

All in all, we sold half of the value of the items we brought to Gallifrey One 2019 – a great ratio of sales for an artist. There was one or two artists that didn’t sell much (there always are). We all have our off-years and it is so unpredictable that sometimes it feels like a game of chance. For me, pieces sold that surprised me and others didn’t that were also puzzling. Here’s the final tally:

    Sold –

    • 4th Doctor Lariat Necklace
    • 5th Doctor Bracelet
    • 11th Doctor Envelope Necklace

    Didn’t Sell –

    • 11th Doctor Bracelet

I had expected not to sell the Envelope Necklace because it was a rather obscure piece. You really have to be a fan of 11 and remember the episode and I guess they did. It got three bids and came close to going to voice auction – two more bids would have sent it there.

    If you Didn’t Get a Piece…

Not to worry! People seemed pleased I am opening an Etsy store for patterns. And I have a surprise in store for the store in the next blog post, which will be a grand opening update. It will make them and our fans quite happy. Stick around as that announcement will be coming very soon.

    A Final Thank You

I want to thank the art show El Heffes Elizabeth Klein-Lebbink and her significant other Jerome Scott. We have known you two beautiful people for decades now and you are the best art show mavens in the biz. I always get a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart when I see these two at a con and that feeling grows every year. I warned them to expect me next year and indeed also at Loscon Thanksgiving Weekend back at the same hotel. Sorry, Liz, you won’t be getting rid of me that easily. No more hiatuses for me!

  • Gallifrey One 2019 Art Show Update part three

    On our way

We are finally on our way to Gallifrey One 2019. It feels strange after over a month of doing beadwork on bracelets every day to not have a bead project in hand, beading and ignoring everything else around me.

    I miss it already.

Is that weird? Not when you’re addicted to doing beadwork like I am and have been doing it for so many years. When you do something this intense and it’s something you don’t love, it’s easy to get burned out. Me, I’m already going over ideas for my next art show which hopefully will be for a My Little Pony convention up in Northern California. Of course I’ll stop once in awhile during the panels to pay attention to who’s on stage and hang out with my sister and brother-in-law. But there is always downtime when I’m hanging in the lobby and people watching. Those are the times it’s I sit and sketch out what I want my next project to be.

And now what you’ve all been waiting for

  • Back at Gallifrey One Art Show!

Great news! After years away from the Gallifrey One art show, we have been confirmed to appear once again in 2019! I’ve missed participating and are really looking forward to showing again amongst our Gally friends. There will be some new & old pieces – including a new lariat necklace based on the new female Doctor’s colorful, rainbow-motifed shirt.

Last time (circa 2014), we showcased our peyote-stitched lariat necklace in the color scheme of our favorite Doctor, Peter Davison. And to tell you a little secret, I didn’t want to part with it. I loved it so much I priced it at $200 – and to my utter shock, it SOLD! It was a fair price even that high as it took me a grueling (but enjoyable) 12 hours to make. The new Doctor’s color scheme will be more challenging to make as there are a staggering 11 colors this time around as opposed to the seven in the 4th Doctor’s famous scarf and a mere THREE in Number Five’s.

This Gallifrey One art show around I have also purchased space in the print shop to sell smaller jewelry projects in similar color schemes. You will find earrings and necklaces to match 4, 5 and our wonderful female Doctor’s themes. That way you won’t need to pack a truckload of cash to get a hand-crafted piece of art. There will be something priced for everyone.

Watch this blog for future updates and work-in-progress shots and see you at Gallifrey in 2019!

Gallifrey One: 30 years in the Tardis will be held at the Los Angeles Marriott Hotel February 15-17, 2019.

  • Steampunk Cogs and Clockfaces

A nice find at the Pasadena Bead & Design Show. Got them from StringBead. The best price I’ve ever found for steampunk Cogs and Clockfaces, too! Am toying with the idea of using them in my Tardis Pod cosplay. But will I have time to start and finish the costume along with everything else I’m doing? If not, they’re going into jewelry!

  • The Angels are at Denver Comic Con

Weeping Angel at Denver Comic Con on KCDragonflyLittle Weeping Angel @ Denver Comic Con

Last month saw the first Denver Comic Con with a healthy starting attendance of nearly 20,000. There was a strong presence of the Doctor Who community in cosplay, attendees maxing out panel rooms and queueing to see a full-size Tardis. It is encouraging to see Colorado get their crack at getting some Who love in their own backyard. Thank you, Heather Maloney, for covering this and bringing it to the attention of the Doctor Who community on Twitter. You can read her full article here in the examiner.com. If you aren’t connected to her on Twitter at @DrWhoHeather, you just aren’t getting enough Who coverage in your life.

During the dry spell between series of Doctor Who, I am determined to keep myself busy with all things Who happening off telly. If there is something cool out there, I’ll bring it in here and we can all squee over it, enjoy it or politely clap – whichever you feel inclined to do.

With this in mind, I hit paydirt today in the form of some beautiful cosplay featured on the Doctor Who Cosplay Livejournal forum. I just couldn’t pass these up…

The peeps who brought you the Amy Pond Paradox at DragonCon are at it again! They are organizing another photoshoot for Gallifrey One 2012. Costume/outfit choices are going to be on a first-come, first-serve basis. They are also looking for a photographer since the one at DragonCon won’t be there for Gally. If anyone knows one who will be attending the convention that would like to do it, please contact me and I’ll put them in touch with you. It is tentatively set for Saturday but at this point the date has not yet been finalized. Stay tuned for more info as it comes in. (photo by Christa J. Newman)

  • Gallifrey 2011 – Day 0 LobbyCon Pictures

    friendly drunk doctor who writers

Hmmm…they must be writers. When we first saw them, they had drinks in their hands. We could tell they were writers from that and the English accents, but in case you missed those clues, well, they wanted to make it easier for us to spot them. They were very friendly, by the way.

Where the hell did this woman get so many ribbons already? The convention hasn’t even officially started yet!!!

My Tonner doll has already found his TARDIS…proof that the Doctor can find it anywhere in the universe.

The first costume we saw coming into the convention. Very nice and proof that Dr. River Song drinks.

  • Gallifrey One: Blackjack 21

gallifrey one blackjack 21 logoDennis and I always love this convention…oh my goodness. How could I not adore it when I met Peter Davison (my favorite Doctor) in 1995 at The Six Wives of Gallifrey One? Getting the chance to talk to him, one-on-one, for several minutes while no one else was around, launched my interest in finally sitting down and taking another go at understanding a show that had left me very confused and disinterested when viewing it back in my childhood.

Okay, yes, this used to be embarrassing to admit, but I didn’t understand British humor until I was in my 30s. It was only because Peter was so incredibly nice and sweet and gentle that I got intensely interested in watching the show. He was so much like my husband, Dennis, that the instant linking to the persona behind the 5th Doctor was completely natural.

That was why I wasn’t worried at all about his beautiful daughter, Georgia Moffett, being anything but a reflection of her father. This being her first convention, she said in the closing ceremonies that she had a marvelous time and the fans were wonderful and awesome and fantastic and she thoroughly enjoyed her first Gallifrey experience. Between Dennis and I, we have wonderful memories of her relating her experiences of being the daughter of parents who were both actors, (Her father: “You will always be broke and starve if you become an actor.”), which she said gratefully has not been the case thus far. When acting with her father, upon the director wanting her character to be more flirty with Peter, she replied, “I can’t do that…he’s my father!” Good for her! And two of the most touching things he said to her were, 1. about being in Doctor Who, “It’s your turn now, kiddo.”, and 2. when acting with her, he said he doesn’t always see the women she has become, but sees, “his little girl”. This is the beauty in the heart of the man I have come to adore as my favorite Doctor, that place challenged only by David Tennant, and then, it is a neck-and-neck race.

This being the case, you can only imagine my glee and joy when the Children in Need special, “Time Crash”, aired. (Editor’s note: the link to the video no longer works and there appears to be no copy of the episode left on YouTube. If you know of a valid link, please let me know!)

An awesome Gallifrey this year, with great costumes of Timelords:

timelords at gallifrey one blackjack 21

A fantastic cosplay of Sally Sparrow and a Weeping Angel from the Tennant episode, “Blink”, a HUGELY popular and scary episode, ranking among the cream of the best of the crop of his era so far.

Am soooo looking forward to next year’s Gallifrey when Peter Davison will be back and we have had the first year of the new Matt Smith Doctor. We also got to preview the brand new trailer for his era. He already looks promising, though the outfit does look like he mugged a schoolteacher…*sigh* Guess they all can’t be dressed as hot as David Tennant.
